When Walter Buchegger acquired the Geppling vineyard in 2000, it was still called Gebling and was located in the Kremstal. A few years later, the DAC vineyard classification regulations were issued, and since then the vineyard has been called Geppling and is located in the Kamptal. But that’s just how it is with boundaries that are drawn—they don’t always fit… Regardless, we vinify a typical, spicy, and very full-bodied Veltliner from the grapes of this vineyard.
The Geppling lies on a thick layer of loess and is the last vineyard terrace below the Gobelsberg Plateau. The vineyards face southeast, so they bask in the sun early in the morning and are in the shade early in the evening—ideal conditions for white wines. The vines are a good 50 years old—old, gnarled vines that are very vigorous and healthy, delivering perfectly sound grapes for the harvest every vintage.
The wine’s appeal lies in its playful lightness combined with elegance and ripe acidity. The nose reveals ripe yellow fruits, and the palate offers a pleasant, lively dance. A great food pairing with medium-bodied structure and a balanced interplay of fruit and acidity, it can be enjoyed young but will also age well for at least five years.
