The Grüner Veltliner Leopold and the Grüner Veltliner Pfarrweingarten are something like very different twins. Both wines were created at a time when single-vineyard wines were not yet so heavily promoted, and for a long time they were the quality flagship of our winery. They still are, except that the range has broadened somewhat with the Riesling Ried Moosburgerin and the Grüner Veltliner Vordernberg. The Leopold, named by the winery’s founder Walter Buchegger after his father, comes from selected vines in our best vineyards, whose grapes are harvested very late each year when they have reached a high level of ripeness. Walter Buchegger once said that the Leopold should be “a prackata Wein”—that is, a robust, full-bodied, smooth wine with richness and depth. We leave the wine on the mash longer than the Grüner Veltliner Pfarrweingarten (namely about six hours) and then allow it to ferment and age in large, neutral oak barrels. This gives it a rounder flavor than the Pfarrweingarten. It captivates with its opulent texture and tropical fruit nuances; it is juicy, mineral-driven, and full of finesse, and is well worth long-term aging. All of these qualities are why the Leopold was awarded the Falstaff Kremstal DAC Cup a few years ago. Also available in older vintages.
